Endpoints and Clouds

The vast majority of solutions on the market today fall squarely into one of two categories; end-point security or cloud/network based security solutions. Vendors of each tout the benefits that can they have over the other as a result of choosing this architecture. End-point solutions claim that because the agent software resides on the device itself it offers the most granular control and best possible mitigation. Cloud and network based solutions claim that holistic coverage is what is needed to achieve security and compliance. Let’s break this down.
With such strengths and weaknesses associated with both, you can see why it is easy to debate the subject. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have all the benefit of both an endpoint agent with all the combined gains you get from a cloud based solution without any of the negatives?
The way to achieve this is by combining the two concepts. Put an agent on the endpoint to achieve that granular control and best risk mitigation but control and manage those endpoints in the cloud where you get maximum visibility, complete coverage, centralized management and global reporting. A cloud based solution (also known as software as a service or SaaS) can offer deployment ease and no hardware requirements. The solution should include multiple risk mitigation technologies within one agent from one vendor to avoid software conflicts and support nightmares. A combination endpoint/cloud solution can also take care of those remote users, travelers and telecommuters that need the same level of security, but often don’t get it because they are not inside the brick and mortar of an office.
